How to get rid of Roof rats

Rattus rattus

Also called: black rat, ship rat, fruit rat

Not sure which species you have? Start with How to get rid of rats, then come back to this page for the full sequence.

Roof rats are the athletes of commensal rats: long tail, large ears, a nose that looks sharp compared with a Norway rat, and a preference for the upper third of a structure. They run fences, vines, and utility lines like sidewalks. In California and Florida they are the attic rat. In older ports they are the ship rat of history textbooks, still very much alive in fruit trees. If you set heavy floor traps in a basement for a pest that lives in a palm frond and a soffit, you will conclude traps “do not work.” They work on the runway you actually have. CDC rodent disease guidance still applies; the practical difference is aerial exclusion — chimney, eve, and vine management — not only slab burrows.

How to identify Roof rat

  • Slender body, tail longer than head plus body, large thin ears, pointed snout.
  • Droppings spindle-shaped, smaller than Norway rat capsules.
  • Nests in attics, dense ivy, citrus, palms, and false ceilings.
  • Agile climber; may be seen on overhead wires at dusk.

Signs of an infestation

  • Noises in ceiling voids and soffits, especially after dark.
  • Gnawed fruit, avocado, citrus, or tomatoes left half-eaten in trees.
  • Droppings in attic insulation and grease on rafters.
  • Damaged solar wiring or attic duct insulation.

Biology and why they show up

Roof rats are nocturnal and excellent climbers. They often nest off the ground. They still need water; pet bowls on a porch and leaky AC lines help them. They can be trap-shy. Ivy and unharvested fruit are not landscaping details — they are habitat.

Health and property risk

Attic contamination, chewed wiring (fire conversation), and food contamination. In some regions they interact with flea and mite issues around nests. Pets that climb roofs are a secondary drama we will not recommend.

Proven control sequence

Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.

  1. Take away the aerial highways. Trim trees 6–8 feet from the roof where you can. Pull ivy off siding. Screen vents with 1/4-inch hardware cloth.
  2. Find the entry. Look at roof-to-wall joints, unscreened gable vents, tile gaps, and utility masts. One open eve is enough.
  3. Trap in the attic and along fences. Place snap traps on beams and fence lines, not only on kitchen floors. Use locked boxes around children. Pre-bait if needed.
  4. Harvest and store fruit. Pick ripe fruit. Do not store open boxes of produce on a back porch.
  5. Only then consider labeled exterior bait. Stations belong on runways, including elevated placements where the label allows. Indoor attic baiting risks odor. Prefer traps indoors.

Tools for a roof-rat job

Attic and soffit runways, not a bait station on the lawn. Traps go where the rat travels overhead. Exclusion at the eave matters more than a ground station.

Rats need a larger trap than mice. Set several along the actual runway, in boxes if pets or children use the room. Pre-bait unset for a night if they are shy.

Rat-sized trays for floor runways where you want a catch without a snap trap. Place along walls. Keep out of reach of children and pets; vegetable oil releases the adhesive if something else sticks.

Stuff quarter-sized and smaller holes after you know the runways. Steel wool rusts and gets pulled out. Mesh is not a substitute for a door sweep on a half-inch gap.

Prevention that actually sticks

  • Caps on chimneys and spark arrestors that still meet fire code.
  • No pet food on an upstairs balcony overnight.
  • Repair tile roofs and torn screens after storms — Florida and Gulf lesson.

When to hire a licensed professional

Attic jobs with solar, blown insulation, or unknown wiring are for people who will not step through a ceiling. Multi-unit buildings share attics; one condo treating alone fails.

Traps or poison?

Inside occupied rooms, snap traps plus exclusion are the usual first choice for Roof rats: you confirm the kill and you do not leave a poisoned carcass in a wall. Glue boards are a welfare and non-target problem and are restricted in some places. Rodenticides belong in labeled, tamper-resistant stations — typically outdoors — after sanitation. Indoor baiting is how pets get hurt and how vacation rentals get a smell that lasts weeks. Ultrasonic gadgets do not replace a door sweep. The rodent trapping and rodent baiting method pages cover placement and label law.

What a professional visit costs in the US

Typical residential rodent service often lands around $150–$400 for inspection and first treatment, with follow-ups and exclusion extra. Attics, sewers, food facilities, and apartment stacks cost more. Ask for the species, the runway map, and any product names. Monthly spraying with no findings is a subscription, not control.

Legal and safety notes. Same rodenticide label rules as other rats. Do not use illegal smoke bombs in tile roofs. Wildlife laws generally do not protect commensal Rattus, but your method still cannot endanger people or non-targets.

United States and Tier 1 notes

Dominant in much of the US Sun Belt and West Coast irrigated cities. Less common as an outdoor species in the cold Upper Midwest, but warehouses and zoos still see them. Hawaii has a serious roof-rat story around agriculture and conservation. Australia and Mediterranean EU cities share the species.

Common questions

Can roof rats come from the sewer like Norway rats?

They are less tied to sewers and more tied to vegetation and roofs. You can still have both species on one property.

Will ultrasonic attic gadgets work?

There is no reliable evidence they replace exclusion. Fix the hole.

Can I get rid of Roof rats without poison?

Yes. Inside occupied buildings, sanitation, metal exclusion, and snap traps on runways are the first tools. Indoor baiting leaves carcasses in walls and raises pet and child risk. The EPA label is the law if you still use a rodenticide — typically in outdoor tamper-resistant stations after food sources are cut. See the rodent trapping and rodent baiting method pages.

How much does professional rodent control cost in the United States?

There is no national rate card. Typical residential visits often land around $150–$400 for inspection and first service, with follow-ups extra. Exclusion, attic access, sewer cameras, and multi-family buildings cost more. Get species, runways, and product names in writing. Monthly spraying with no findings is not IPM.

When should I stop DIY and hire a licensed operator?

Attic jobs with solar, blown insulation, or unknown wiring are for people who will not step through a ceiling. Multi-unit buildings share attics; one condo treating alone fails.

Do ultrasonic pest repellers work?

There is no reliable evidence that plug-in ultrasonic gadgets replace exclusion and trapping. Fix the hole. Put traps on the runway.
