Rodents

Can rats climb brick?

Yes. Brick with recessed mortar is a ladder, not a fortress. Roof rat use it to reach eaves. Norway rat use it for short climbs into a dryer vent or a utility chase. The stop is a tight screen and metal at the destination, not a hope that masonry is too smooth.

Why brick is not a barrier

A rat claw needs a lip. Mortar joints, weeping holes, a cracked brick, and the gap around a hose bib provide it. Painted brick that is flush and well pointed is harder. Historic brick with deep joints is easy. If you have ivy on that brick, you have a staircase plus cover.

The rat is usually not living in the brick. It is commuting to a soffit, a chimney chase, or a dryer vent. Treat the landing, not the whole wall with a gallon of repellent.

Where brick climbs actually matter

Hardware cloth over weeps has to keep water moving. Do not caulk weeps shut as a rat plan. Ask a mason if you are changing drainage.

  • Chimney shoulders and the gap beside a flue
  • The first-story to eave run on a tight city lot
  • A brick planter against a foundation that hides a burrow and a climb
  • Weep holes large enough for a mouse; pair with mouse exclusion on the same wall
