Rodents
Do rats come out during the day?
They are mostly nocturnal, but daylight rats happen. A rat in the open at noon often means the colony is large, the night food is gone, or the animal is ill. One daylight sighting is not “only one rat.” Assume a runway and inspect.
What daylight usually means
Commensal rats avoid people. When you see one at 2 p.m. on a dumpster pad, the night shift is crowded or the only calories are a lunch spill. In an attic, a roof rat moving in the afternoon can mean heat, disturbance, or a large family. CDC rodent guidance still applies: sanitation, exclusion, and targeted trapping. Do not read a single noon rat as a completed job.
Illness and pets
A wobbly daylight rodent can be poison, disease, or injury. Keep pets in. Do not handle it. If you used a rodenticide, you already accepted a carcass-in-the-open risk. Snap traps plus exclusion skip that theater.
