How to get rid of cockroaches
Cockroach is not one job. A German cockroach infestation is a kitchen and appliance story. An American cockroach infestation is often a sewer, steam tunnel, or mulch story. Treating the wrong species with a consumer fogger usually spreads the population and contaminates air without touching harborages.
German, American, or something else?
German cockroaches are small, tan, indoor-only in the United States, with two dark stripes on the pronotum. They live in refrigerator motors, stove hinges, and grocery bags. American cockroaches are large, reddish-brown, and often commute from sewers, steam rooms, and palm thatch. Oriental cockroaches prefer cool, damp basements and floor drains. Brown-banded cockroaches can live higher in rooms, including bedrooms, and are less tied to the kitchen sink. Smokybrown cockroaches are an outdoor-to-attic species in humid cities.
If you see small tan cockroaches in a kitchen in daylight, assume a large German population until proven otherwise. If you see a large roach on a porch after rain, check mulch, drains, and tree holes before you bait a spotless pantry.

The control sequence
University IPM programs still win with sanitation, gel baits in cracks, insect growth regulators where labeled, and monitors. Weekly baseboard spraying is how people buy resistance and a bigger problem.
- Identify the species. Size, stripes, and location matter. Open the matching species page before you shop.
- Remove competing food and water. Degrease the stove, empty the toaster, fix leaks, wash pet bowls. Bait is food; grease wins otherwise.
- Place gel bait in harborages. Many small dots in hinges, corners, and voids. Do not smear bait on an open baseboard and do not spray a repellent on top of it.
- Monitor. Sticky monitors tell you if the next apartment is feeding yours. In stacks, coordinate neighbors.
- Hire help for buildings and food sites. A one-unit treatment in a stacked building often fails. Food facilities need a documented program, not a fogger.
Do not fog a kitchen
Total-release foggers miss cracks, flush cockroaches into new rooms, and have injured people when used near ignition sources. They are the opposite of IPM. HUD treats cockroach IPM as a healthy-homes method because cockroach allergen is an asthma issue in housing, not a cosmetic spray.
What professional cockroach control costs in the United States
A German cockroach job in a single-family kitchen may start in the same band as other residential insect services — often roughly $150 to $400 for the first visit — but apartments, restaurants, and heavy populations need follow-ups and sometimes a building-wide plan. That costs more than a one-time spray quote. Ask whether the operator baits and monitors or only fogs. If the answer is fog, keep shopping.
