How to get rid of German cockroaches

German cockroaches are small, tan, and indoor-only in the United States. Two dark stripes on the pronotum are the field mark. They do not commute from the alley like American cockroaches; they live in the refrigerator motor, the stove hinge, and the paper grocery bag you brought home. HUD and EPA treat them as an asthma-allergen issue in housing, not a moral failing. Foggers make them scatter into the next apartment. Gel baits in cracks, sanitation, IGRs, and monitors are the program that still works after decades of insecticide resistance. How to identify German cockroach
- Adults about 1/2–5/8 inch, light brown, two parallel dark stripes on the shield behind the head.
- Wings present but they do not fly in typical US homes.
- Egg case (ootheca) carried by the female until near hatch — a high reproductive rate.
- Found in kitchens, bathrooms, and break rooms — not typically a mulch species.
Signs of an infestation
- Pepper-like droppings in cabinet hinges and drawer tracks.
- A stale, oily odor in heavy infestations.
- Live insects in appliance voids at night (use a flashlight).
- Nymphs of many sizes — a sign of ongoing reproduction.
Biology and why they show up
They need warmth, water, and crumbs. They are thigmotactic (they pack into cracks). Resistance to many consumer sprays is documented. They hitchhike in used appliances and cardboard. A single gravid female can restart a kitchen.
Health and property risk
Asthma and allergic disease are the housing-health story. They contaminate food. They are not typical disease-outbreak vectors in the sensational sense, but they are a legitimate public-health pest in dense housing.

Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Clean competing food. Degrease the stove, empty the toaster, wash the pet bowl at night. Bait is food; grease wins otherwise.
