How to get rid of American cockroaches

American cockroaches are the large, reddish-brown insects people in the South call palmetto bugs. The name is folk language covering more than one species. Periplaneta americana flies short distances, lives in sewers, steam tunnels, boiler rooms, and mulch, and wanders indoors — especially after rain. Kitchen gel bait still helps, but if the harborage is a floor drain or a palm thatch, you are treating the wrong room. They are not German cockroaches. A basement floor drain program is not a cabinet-hinge program.
How to identify American cockroach
- Large (up to 1.5–2 inches), reddish brown, yellow figure-8 pattern on the pronotum.
- Capable of gliding flights, especially in warm conditions.
- Found in sewers, crawlspaces, steam rooms, and mulch — not only kitchens.
Signs of an infestation
- Large dark droppings, egg cases in basements.
- Sightings near floor drains and utility rooms after rain.

Biology and why they show up
They develop more slowly than German cockroaches but get much larger. They need moisture. Sewer systems are highways. They can enter through drains if traps dry out.
