How to get rid of Oriental cockroaches

Blatta orientalis

Also called: black beetle (folk), waterbug

Not sure which species you have? Start with How to get rid of cockroaches, then come back to this page for the full sequence.

Oriental cockroaches are dark, greasy-looking, and slower than German cockroaches. Females have short wings; they are not built for kitchen-cabinet speed. They love decaying organic matter, floor drains, and cool damp basements. People call them waterbugs. If you bait only the cookie cabinet, you miss the crawlspace. Moisture control is half of this species.

How to identify Oriental cockroach

  • Shiny dark brown to black, about 1 inch, females nearly wingless in appearance.
  • Strong odor in aggregations.
  • Associated with drains, mulch, and cool cellars more than hot kitchens.

Signs of an infestation

  • Insects on basement floors, especially after rain.
  • Droppings in crawlspaces.
  • Activity around floor drains.

Biology and why they show up

Slower development, moisture-dependent. They can live on decaying matter outdoors and wander in. Less heat-loving than German cockroaches.

Health and property risk

Contamination and odor. Asthma contribution possible. Not a wood destroyer.

Proven control sequence

Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.

  1. Dry the basement. Grade, gutters, dehumidifier, and plumbing repairs. See the moisture-control method page.
  2. Clean drains. Organic film feeds them and drain flies. Mechanical cleaning first.
  3. Bait at floor level harborages. Crawlspace edges, drain rooms — labeled products.
  4. Exclusion at ground contacts. Door sweeps and utility seals.

Basement moisture and floor drains first. Bait at the harborage, not only the kitchen counter.

Many small dots in hinges, corners, and appliance voids — not a smear on an open baseboard. Do not spray a repellent on top of bait. Read the EPA label for site and food-area rules.

Sticky cockroach / insect monitors

Monitors tell you if the next cabinet or the next apartment is feeding yours. They are not control by themselves. Place them on the floor at harborages, not in the middle of a clean counter.

Drain flies breed in biofilm, not in the air. Mechanical cleaning of the P-trap and rarely used drains beats a fogger in the bathroom.

Prevention that actually sticks

  • Pull mulch off the foundation.
  • Do not store cardboard on a damp basement floor.

When to hire a licensed professional

Chronic crawlspace moisture may need a contractor, not a spray tech.

Skip the fogger

Gel bait in cracks, sanitation, and monitors beat weekly baseboard spray for Oriental cockroaches. Total-release foggers miss harborages and scatter the population. If someone in the home has asthma, cockroach allergen is a health issue — HUD treats IPM in housing as a healthy-homes method, not a cosmetic spray.

What professional cockroach control costs in the US

A first residential visit often falls in a similar range to other insect jobs (roughly $150–$400), but German cockroaches in apartments and food sites need follow-ups and sometimes a building-wide plan. Pay for baiting and monitoring, not a fogger truck.

Legal and safety notes. Label sites for damp areas and drains vary. Do not dump leftover concentrate in a drain.

United States and Tier 1 notes

Pacific Northwest, Northeast, Midwest basements. Less dominant than American cockroaches in deep subtropical Florida, but still present in cooled buildings.

Common questions

Why do they appear after rain?

Outdoor harborages flood and indoor drains back-breathe. Fix water, then bait.

Will a fogger get rid of Oriental cockroaches?

No. Total-release foggers miss cracks, scatter cockroaches into new rooms, and can injure people near ignition sources. Use sanitation plus gel bait in harborages, or hire an operator who will bait and monitor — not fog.

How much does professional cockroach control cost in the United States?

A single-family kitchen visit often starts in a similar band to other residential insect work (roughly $150–$400 for a first visit), but apartments, restaurants, and heavy German cockroach populations need follow-ups and sometimes a building-wide plan. Ask whether the operator baits and monitors. If the plan is only a fogger, keep shopping.
