Moisture control for pest prevention
A surprising fraction of “mystery bugs” are moisture meters in insect form: fungus gnats, springtails, drain flies, subterranean termites, carpenter ants, and millipedes. Dry the structure and many programs collapse in your favor.
When this method is the right tool
Use this whenever you have a crawlspace, a slab leak, a humid bathroom without a fan, mulch volcanoes, or an irrigation head aimed at siding.
How to do it
- Find the water. Stains, soft drywall, AC condensate, irrigation overspray, clogged gutters, and negative grade.
- Ventilate or dehumidify. Bath fans to the exterior, not the attic. Crawlspace vapor barriers where appropriate.
- Pull organic matter off the foundation. Mulch and soil against stucco is a termite and roach ladder.
- Repair plumbing. A slow P-trap leak is a drain-fly farm and a cockroach watering hole.
Tools this method is written for
Measure first. Wet wood and wet plaster are pest utilities.

Mistakes that waste money
- Running a dehumidifier while a hidden leak still feeds the wood.
- Closing crawlspace vents incorrectly without a designed moisture plan.
Safety
Mold remediation and pest control overlap but are not the same license in most states. Sewage backups are a biohazard — use appropriate PPE or a restoration firm.
