How to get rid of silverfish
Lepisma saccharinum
Silverfish are wingless, silvery, carrot-shaped insects that eat starches: paper, glue, book bindings, and sometimes textiles. They need humidity. The control is dry air, reduce paper piles, and fix leaks — not a monthly fog of a library. Firebrats are a related hotter-site insect (around furnaces). If you see them in a bathroom, look for a leak before you look for a pesticide.
How to identify Silverfish
- Silvery scales, long antennae, three tail bristles, fast, no wings.
- Nocturnal on bathroom floors and in boxes of papers.
Signs of an infestation
- Notched paper and book glue.
- Yellowish stains on fabric.
- Live insects when you turn on a light at night.
Biology and why they show up
Ametabolous (no dramatic larva stage). Long-lived. Humidity-dependent. They eat carbohydrates in glue and paper.
Health and property risk
Archive and wallpaper damage. Not a disease vector.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Dry the room. Fans, dehumidifiers, leak repair. This is the treatment.
- Reduce paper harborage. Boxes off damp floors. Archives in sealed bins.
- Sticky monitors and labeled dusts in voids if needed. After moisture is fixed. Not a fogger in a bedroom of books.
Matching tools for these steps can be bought on Amazon. Buy the field kit.
Tools that support a silverfish job
Moisture and starch first. Monitors show whether the bathroom or the book stack is the harborage.

Hardware
Sticky cockroach / insect monitors
Monitors tell you if the next cabinet or the next apartment is feeding yours. They are not control by themselves. Place them on the floor at harborages, not in the middle of a clean counter.
Labeled product
Hot Shot indoor insect fogger
Total-release cans for enclosed rooms. Follow the EPA label: leave the structure, cover aquariums, keep flames and pilots as the can requires, and stay out for the stated time. Poison control in the US: 1-800-222-1222.
Hardware
Ultrasonic pest repeller (plug-in)
Plug-in sound units sold for rodents, cockroaches, and other indoor pests. Cover more than one room if that is how the house is laid out. Read the pack for pet and hearing notes.
Prevention that actually sticks
- Exhaust bathrooms outside, not into an attic.
- Do not store newspapers in a damp basement.
When to hire a licensed professional
Libraries, archives, chronic crawlspace humidity.
United States and Tier 1 notes
Global humid-housing insect. Worse in the Southeast and Pacific Northwest.
Common questions
Are they cockroaches?
No. Different order, different humidity story, no egg cases like Blattella.
