Cockroach baiting and IGRs
Modern German cockroach control is gel bait in cracks, an insect growth regulator where labeled, sanitation, and monitors. It is not a fogger. Foggers flush cockroaches into new rooms, miss harborages, and are a documented fire and overexposure risk.
When this method is the right tool
Use baiting for German and brown-banded cockroaches in kitchens, break rooms, and apartments. American and Oriental cockroaches also respond to sanitation plus baits, but you must treat the true harborage (sewers, crawlspaces, floor drains).
How to do it
- Clean the competing food. Bait is a food. If grease wins, bait loses.
- Place small dots in harborages. Hinges, under sinks, behind refrigerators, cabinet corners. Many small placements beat one smear on a baseboard.
- Do not spray on top of bait. Repellent sprays make cockroaches avoid the bait you just paid for.
- Add an IGR if labeled. Growth regulators help with heavy German infestations by disrupting reproduction. Follow the label.
- Monitor weekly. Sticky monitors tell you if you are winning. Guessing does not.
Bait and monitors for this method
Dots in harborages. Monitors to see if the population is actually dropping. Total-release foggers are the opposite of this method: they miss cracks and flush cockroaches into new rooms.

Labeled product
Combat Max cockroach gel bait (syringe)
Many small dots in hinges, corners, and appliance voids — not a smear on an open baseboard. Do not spray a repellent on top of bait. Read the EPA label for site and food-area rules.
Hardware
Sticky cockroach / insect monitors
Monitors tell you if the next cabinet or the next apartment is feeding yours. They are not control by themselves. Place them on the floor at harborages, not in the middle of a clean counter.

Cockroach insect growth regulator discs
IGRs sit next to gel, not instead of it. They slow a German kitchen that is already on bait and sanitation. Read the EPA label for rooms and food areas.
Mistakes that waste money
- Using a total-release fogger in a kitchen.
- Spraying baseboards every weekend.
- Baiting a dirty stove and declaring baits “do not work.”
Safety
Keep gels away from food-contact surfaces and children. Wash hands. If asthma is in the household, reducing cockroach allergen is a health goal — HUD IPM programs exist for this reason.

Common questions
Will a fogger get rid of German cockroaches?
No. Foggers miss harborages, scatter the population into new rooms, and can injure people near ignition sources. Gel bait in cracks plus sanitation is the program that still works.
How much does professional cockroach control cost in the US?
A first residential visit often falls around $150–$400, but apartments and food facilities need follow-ups and sometimes a building-wide plan. Ask whether the operator baits and monitors. If the plan is only a fogger, keep shopping.
