How high can rats jump?
Plan on about 2–3 feet of vertical jump for a healthy commensal rat, plus whatever dumpster, bin, or AC condenser sits under the opening. Jump height is the wrong number to obsess over. Climbing and stacked clutter beat a tape measure.
What the number is good for
Extension teaching often uses a couple of feet as a standing vertical jump. That matters for a low window, a loading-dock ledge, and a dumpster lip. It does not mean a 36-inch kickplate on a door solves a vine-to-roof commute. A rat that can climb does not need a heroic jump.
Downward drops are easier than upward leaps. A rat leaving a dumpster or a porch roof is not limited by the same number.
Field use
Clear the step-stools: pallets, trash totes, stacked firewood, and the grill against the siding. Then metal-seal the hole. A “they cannot jump that high” argument fails the first night a bin gets left under the window.
