How to get rid of Eastern gray squirrels
Sciurus carolinensis
Need a look-alike split? Use Yard rodent identification, then follow the control sequence on this page.
Gray squirrels are daytime, charismatic, and fully capable of opening a soffit like a can. Attic latrines, chewed wiring, and torn screens are the pest version of the park animal. They are not rats; they are wildlife with spring young in dreys and attics. The proven sequence is determine occupancy (do not trap a mother out during nesting season without a plan), install a one-way door, then rebuild with metal. Plastic owl statues do not work. In the UK they are an invasive-species policy issue as well as a loft pest — follow local law, which may differ from a US suburb.
How to identify Eastern gray squirrel
- Gray (sometimes melanistic black) diurnal squirrel with a bushy tail, 15–20 inches including tail.
- Leaf dreys in trees; attics used as dens.
- Daytime activity on bird feeders and roofs.
Signs of an infestation
- Rolling noises in the attic by day.
- Walnut shells and droppings in insulation.
- Chewed fascia and ridge vents.
Biology and why they show up
Two breeding peaks in many regions. They cache nuts. They will gnaw plastic vents. They remember feeder schedules better than you want.
Health and property risk
Wiring fires, insulation contamination, and occasional falls into living space. Bites if hand-fed — do not. Not a rabies-vector species in the same legal category as raccoons in most US states, but any wild bite still needs medical advice.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Time the exclusion. Avoid sealing young inside in spring. A one-way door after young can follow is the professional standard.
- Rebuild with metal. Hardware cloth on vents, metal flashing on fascia. Chewable plastic fails.
- Change the feeder. If you insist on feeding birds, use baffles. Do not feed squirrels at the foundation.
- Trap only as law allows. Many cities restrict relocation. Lethal control of squirrels is regulated. Hire a NWCO when in doubt.

Tools when gray squirrels use the envelope
Hardware cloth on vents, a chimney cap if the flue is the door, then repair. Trapping wildlife is a local-law question.

Hardware
1/4-inch galvanized hardware cloth
Cut patches for vents, soffits, and the gaps foam cannot hold. Quarter-inch mesh stops mice; rats need a heavier gauge and no loose edges. Fasten to wood or masonry, then seal the rim.
Hardware
Animal-guard chimney cap
An open flue is a raccoon and bird motel. Cap it after you know the chimney is empty. A cap is exclusion. A live trap in an attic with young inside is a different, often licensed, job.
Hardware
Copper mesh for rodent gaps
Stuff quarter-sized and smaller holes after you know the runways. Steel wool rusts and gets pulled out. Mesh is not a substitute for a door sweep on a half-inch gap.
Hardware
Headlamp or flashlight for inspections
German cockroaches, rodent runways, and bed-bug harborages are night-shift jobs. A light you can point into a hinge beats another can of spray.
Prevention that actually sticks
- Trim limbs 8 feet from the roof where practical.
- Chimney cap.
When to hire a licensed professional
If they are in a chimney or a shared condo attic, hire help. DIY one-way doors installed wrong trap animals in soffits.
United States and Tier 1 notes
Eastern US suburbs. Introduced in parts of California and the Pacific Northwest. UK lofts are a classic job. Italy and other EU introductions exist.
Common questions
Will cayenne on the bird seed stop them?
Sometimes at the feeder, never at the hole in the fascia. Fix the hole.
