Rodents
Can squirrels get in through the roof?
Yes. Eastern gray squirrel chew a fascia return, a plastic vent, or a rotten roof edge. They are diurnal. A hole the size of a fist plus daytime noise is the tell. Hardware cloth, not bird net, and a one-way door only if it is legal and you will repair the hole the same week.
Rat or squirrel
Night-only attic traffic with small spindle droppings is a roof rat. Daytime plus large oval droppings and chewed wood splinters is a squirrel. Wrong trap hurts the wrong animal and can be illegal.
