How to get rid of Fox squirrels

Sciurus niger

Also called: eastern fox squirrel

Need a look-alike split? Use Yard rodent identification, then follow the control sequence on this page.

Fox squirrels are the bigger, often orange-tinged tree squirrel of Midwestern parks and Southern live oaks. Control is the same envelope repair as gray squirrels, but they use slightly different cavity sizes and are bold on the ground. If you have a rust-colored squirrel in a Texas attic, do not write a roof-rat program. Daytime plus bushy tail plus nut debris is Sciurus, not Rattus.

How to identify Fox squirrel

  • Larger than gray squirrels; rusty, tan, or mixed coats; bushy tail.
  • Often forages on the ground more than grays in some landscapes.

Signs of an infestation

  • Attic noise by day, nut debris, chewed wood.
  • Use of large cavities and attics.

Biology and why they show up

Cavity nesters as well as drey nesters. Similar seasonal young. Strong chewers.

Health and property risk

Same as gray squirrels: wiring, contamination, structural chewing.

Proven control sequence

Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.

  1. Identify before you bait for rats. Daytime + bushy tail = squirrel program (exclusion), not a sewer-rat station line.
  2. One-way door then metal. Same as gray squirrels. Time around young.
  3. Close the oak highway. Limb clearance and capped vents.

Tools for fox squirrels at structures

Same envelope job as other tree squirrels: screen the vent, cap the chimney, trim the highway branch.

Cut patches for vents, soffits, and the gaps foam cannot hold. Quarter-inch mesh stops mice; rats need a heavier gauge and no loose edges. Fasten to wood or masonry, then seal the rim.

Animal-guard chimney cap

An open flue is a raccoon and bird motel. Cap it after you know the chimney is empty. A cap is exclusion. A live trap in an attic with young inside is a different, often licensed, job.

Stuff quarter-sized and smaller holes after you know the runways. Steel wool rusts and gets pulled out. Mesh is not a substitute for a door sweep on a half-inch gap.

Prevention that actually sticks

  • Do not leave attic vents as chewable plastic in fox-squirrel country.

When to hire a licensed professional

Large live oaks over tile roofs in the South: hire people who can walk roofs safely.

Legal and safety notes. State wildlife rules; some jurisdictions protect fox squirrels more than people expect. Check before lethal control.

United States and Tier 1 notes

Midwest, South, parts of Texas and the Plains. Western introductions exist. Not a UK species.

Common questions

Are fox squirrels more destructive than grays?

They are larger and equally willing to open a soffit. The repair materials are the same.
