How to get rid of Carpet beetles
Anthrenus and Attagenus spp.
Carpet beetle larvae are hairy and eat animal fibers, shed hair, dead insects, and pollen tracked indoors. Adults are small oval beetles that fly to windows and flowers. Holes in wool get blamed on moths. If you have bristly larvae and window beetles, think carpet beetles — and check a bird nest in a soffit. Vacuum, reduce pet hair, and treat the outdoor nest source. They do not eat people (some larvae cause itchy “carpet beetle dermatitis” from hairs — not bites).
How to identify Carpet beetle
- Adults mottled or black ovals at windows.
- Larvae elongated, bristly, in hidden lint.
- Damage on wool, felt, taxidermy, and stored grain sometimes.
Signs of an infestation
- Cast skins in ducts and closets.
- Adults on sills in spring.
- Holes in a wool rug’s underside.
Biology and why they show up
Complete metamorphosis. Adults feed on pollen outdoors. Larvae are the household stage. Bird and wasp nests seed houses.
Health and property risk
Textile loss. Irritation from larval hairs. Not a structural wood pest.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Vacuum thoroughly and often during knockdown. Edges, under furniture, ducts you can safely reach. Empty outside.
- Find the satellite source. Bird nests, dead insects in attics, wool clutter.
- Launder or isolate infested textiles. Same heat/freeze logic as clothes moths where fabric allows.

Tools that support a carpet-beetle cleanout
Hair, lint, and dead insects are food. Vacuum and inspect wool. Closet traps help you see adults.

Hardware
Clothes moth pheromone traps
Closet moths are not pantry moths. These traps census adults in wool and stored fabric. Clean, freeze, or bag infested goods. Cedar oil is not a treatment.
Hardware
Headlamp or flashlight for inspections
German cockroaches, rodent runways, and bed-bug harborages are night-shift jobs. A light you can point into a hinge beats another can of spray.
Prevention that actually sticks
- Screen soffits so birds do not nest against the attic.
- Reduce lint and pet hair.
When to hire a licensed professional
Museums, wool warehouses, heavy attic nest pressure.
United States and Tier 1 notes
Global. Spring window adults are a northern and mid-latitude classic.
Common questions
Are they bed bugs?
No. Hairy larvae vs flat rust-red bed bugs. Wrong treatment if mixed.
