How to get rid of Rice weevils

Sitophilus oryzae

Also called: grain weevil

Rice weevils have snouts and develop inside whole kernels. You may see holes in rice and adults walking from a bag. They are not flour beetles (no snout, different food). Control is still discard, clean, and sealed storage. Farm bins are a different licensed world. Home kitchens should not fumigate.

How to identify Rice weevil

  • Snout, reddish-brown, pits on the thorax, found in rice and whole grain.
  • Holes in kernels. Larvae hidden inside seeds.

Signs of an infestation

  • Weevils in rice.
  • Dust and holes in dry corn or pasta.

Biology and why they show up

Internal kernel feeders. Warmth speeds them. They fly in some conditions and reinfest.

Health and property risk

Food loss. Not a pathogen vector in the mosquito sense.

Proven control sequence

Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.

  1. Discard infested whole grains. The insects are inside kernels you cannot pick out reliably.
  2. Clean and use sealed containers. Same pantry protocol. Check bird seed and popcorn.

Tools for rice weevils

Infested grain goes out. Gasketed storage keeps the next bag from becoming a culture.

Gasketed food storage containers

Hardware

Gasketed food storage containers

Thin cardboard is a moth highway. Move grain, pet food, and bird seed into gasketed bins after you find the source. The garage bag of dog food counts.

Prevention that actually sticks

  • Inspect rice on purchase. Do not store open 25-pound bags in a garage for a year.

When to hire a licensed professional

Grain elevators — not this page’s DIY.

Legal and safety notes. Bin fumigants are restricted-use. Illegal and dangerous in a home.

United States and Tier 1 notes

Warm US storage, global rice trade. Same species name worldwide.

Common questions

Will bay leaves stop weevils?

Not a control program. Sealed containers are.
