How to get rid of Indian meal moths
Plodia interpunctella
Indian meal moths are the small moths on kitchen ceilings whose larvae silk together cereal, chocolate, nuts, and bird seed. The moth is the advertisement; the source is a package you forgot. Fogging a pantry leaves residue on food and misses the larva in a paper bag. Inspect every dry good including garage bird seed, discard or freeze infested food, vacuum shelf tracks, and store in gasketed containers. Mouse bait stations with grain can be a hidden reservoir.
How to identify Indian meal moth
- Two-toned wings: pale inner third, copper outer two-thirds.
- Larvae cream-colored with dark heads, silk webbing in food.
- Rest on ceilings and walls at rest, not typically on windows like cluster flies in winter masses.
Signs of an infestation
- Silk in a cereal box.
- Moths at dusk in the kitchen.
- Larvae on walls migrating to pupate.

Larvae feed in dry goods. Pupae in cracks and ceiling-wall junctions. Hitchhike in bulk food and bird seed.
