How to get rid of Powderpost beetles
Lyctinae and Anobiinae (and related woodborers)
Need a look-alike split? Use Powderpost beetle vs old house borer, then follow the control sequence on this page.
Powderpost beetles make tiny round exit holes and flour-like frass in unfinished hardwood, bamboo, and rustic furniture. Tape holes and watch for new powder before you spend. Dry and finish exposed sapwood. A hardware spray on a floor does not reach larvae. Whole-structure treatment is licensed work. They are not termites.
Powderpost beetles leave tiny shot-holes and fine flour-like frass in sapwood, especially unfinished hardwoods, bamboo, and rustic furniture. They are not termites (no mud tubes, different frass). New holes with fresh powder mean activity; old holes in antique oak may be extinct. Control ranges from moisture reduction and finishing wood to professional fumigation of a structure or replacement of infested boards. A hardware spray on a floor does not reach larvae in the wood. Identify lyctid vs anobiid with a pro — moisture and wood type change the prognosis.
How to identify Powderpost beetle
- Tiny round exit holes, talc-like powder (lyctids) or grittier frass (some anobiids).
- No soil tubes. Galleries in sapwood.
- Adults small beetles at windows sometimes.
Signs of an infestation
- Fresh piles of powder on a floor or furniture.
- New holes in a recently installed hardwood or bamboo floor.
Biology and why they show up
Larvae in wood for months to years. Reinfestation risk depends on unfinished sapwood and moisture. Anobiids often associated with higher moisture than lyctids.
Health and property risk
Structural or flooring damage over time. Not a human biter.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Confirm active vs old damage. Tape over holes and watch for new powder. Old barns can be historic damage.
- Dry and finish exposed sapwood. Seal, paint, or varnish as appropriate. Fix moisture (anobiids).
- Replace or professionally treat. Fumigation or other whole-structure methods are licensed. Spot surface sprays miss larvae.
Frass, holes, and active vs old infestation
Fresh, light-colored powder under new holes means activity. Dark holes in antique oak with no new powder may be historic. Tape a card over holes and check for new frass. Lyctids often leave talc-like powder in sapwood; some anobiids leave grittier frass and like higher moisture. No soil tubes — those are subterranean termites.
Compare oval holes and rasping in pine framing: Powderpost beetle vs old house borer. Drywood termite pellets are hexagonal poppy-seed frass, not talc. When money is large, a licensed wood-destroying-insect inspector beats a guess.
Moisture, finishing, and professional triggers
Finish or paint exposed sapwood. Fix moisture for anobiid pressure (Moisture control for pest prevention). Replace a badly infested board. Fumigation or other whole-structure methods are not DIY and are not a consumer fogger. Do not buy mystery “wood poison” online.
When to hire a licensed professional when structural members are involved, when you cannot tell beetles from Drywood termite, or at real estate. This directory does not overpromise a spray treatment.
Prevention that actually sticks
- Do not store unfinished hardwood in a damp shed against the house.
- Inspect rustic furniture and firewood (do not store firewood indoors).
When to hire a licensed professional
Yes for structural members and whole-house decisions. This is easy to confuse with drywood termites.
United States and Tier 1 notes
Humid South and coastal CA see more anobiid activity. Lyctids in hardwood floors nationwide.
Common questions
Is it termites?
Powder and shot-holes versus mud tubes or hexagonal pellets. When unsure, a licensed inspector.
How do I get rid of powderpost beetles?
Confirm activity, dry and finish wood, replace infested boards, and hire licensed treatment for structure-wide larvae. Surface sprays miss the insect in the timber.
How much does termite treatment cost in the United States?
Licensed termite work is a construction-adjacent service, not a retail spray. Liquid barriers, baiting systems, and drywood treatments vary widely by region, foundation type, and whether a repair is included — often from the high hundreds into several thousand dollars. Get a licensed inspection. A hardware-aisle can does not treat a colony.
