How to get rid of Ground squirrels
Otospermophilus and related genera
Ground squirrels are diurnal, colonial or loosely colonial burrowers that wreck berms, chew irrigation, and in California carry a plague-surveillance conversation in some wildlands (public-health agencies, not a DIY diagnosis). They are not tree squirrels and not pocket gophers (mound shape differs). Control on acreage is a planned IPM program with trapping, habitat, and sometimes labeled baits under agricultural rules. On a suburban lot, filling burrows without removing animals is a treadmill. Do not confuse “ground squirrel” with “prairie dog” legally — different species, sometimes different protections.
How to identify Ground squirrel
- Diurnal, spotted or mottled coats depending on species, burrow colonies on berms and rocky slopes.
- Upright “picket pin” posture. Open burrows, not crescent gopher fans.
Signs of an infestation
- Multiple open holes on a bank.
- Chewed sprinklers.
- Daytime foraging in groups.
Biology and why they show up
Many species estivate in heat and hibernate in cold. They eat greens, seeds, and insects. They alarm-call. Flea load on wild rodents is why public-health agencies sometimes issue warnings — follow those, do not handle sick squirrels.
Health and property risk
Infrastructure damage, livestock holes, and in some western wildlands a plague-flea public-health context around die-offs. Do not skin or handle found-dead rodents. CDC plague pages apply in those rare notices.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Identify the mound. Gopher vs ground squirrel vs prairie dog. Wrong ID, wrong trap.
- Trap on active burrows. Use traps designed for the species, as local law allows. Protect pets.
- Acreage baiting is regulated. Agricultural labels, livestock, and non-target raptors. This is not a hardware-aisle weekend in many counties.
- Do not handle die-offs. Call local public health if you see unusual numbers of dead wild rodents in plague-risk West.
