How to get rid of Prairie dogs

Cynomys spp.

Prairie dogs are colonial, diurnal ground squirrels of the Plains. They are ecosystem engineers and also a conflict species on rangeland, airports, and expanding suburbs. Some species are conservation-listed. Plague (Yersinia pestis) circulates in some western rodent fleas — public-health agencies issue local guidance; do not handle sick prairie dogs. Control on private rangeland is a regulated IPM and often agricultural-pesticide domain. A suburban HOA should not improvise. This is not a house mouse.

How to identify Prairie dog

  • Tan, colonial, barking, volcano-like burrow mounds in shortgrass.
  • Diurnal sentinel behavior.

Signs of an infestation

  • Towns of mounds on a prairie or vacant lot.
  • Grazed “lawn” around burrows.
  • Alarm barks.

Biology and why they show up

Complex social structure. They clip vegetation. Fleas can be a public-health issue during die-offs. They are not isolated “one gopher.”

Health and property risk

Livestock injury in holes, airport wildlife hazard, and plague-flea risk in some western outbreaks. CDC: do not handle dead prairie dogs; call health departments when die-offs occur.

Proven control sequence

Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.

  1. Check legal status first. Utah prairie dogs and others have protections. Black-tailed prairie dogs still have local ordinances.
  2. Use coordinated programs. Counties and USDA Wildlife Services sometimes run projects. Off-label baiting is illegal.
  3. Do not “adopt” wild prairie dogs as pets. Monkeypox history in the pet trade is why the US tightened rules. Leave them wild.

Prevention that actually sticks

  • Plan developments with wildlife agencies if a town is on the plat.
  • Do not feed colonies.

Yes. Always for towns on a property. This is not DIY rodenticide on a playground.
