How to get rid of Cat fleas

Ctenocephalides felis

Also called: flea

If people are bitten around the ankles and the pet is scratching, think cat fleas — even on a dog. Adults live on the animal; eggs fall into carpet and furniture, where larvae feed on dried blood (flea dirt). Treating only the living room once, or only the pet once, is why fleas “come back in two weeks” (they hatched). The proven sequence is veterinarian-directed pet treatment, wash pet bedding, vacuum thoroughly (and empty the vacuum), and a labeled IGR or premise treatment if the infestation is established. Wildlife (opossums, raccoons) can seed a yard; that does not replace pet treatment.

How to identify Cat flea

  • Laterally flattened, jumping insects, dark, small.
  • Flea dirt (black specks that turn red-brown wet) on pet bedding.
  • Larvae in carpet nap and cracks — you will not see them easily.

Signs of an infestation

  • Pet scratching, scabs at the tail base.
  • Ankle bites on people, especially if the pet was recently boarded or a stray visited.
  • Adults in light-colored socks over carpet.

Biology and why they show up

Most of the population is not on the pet. Pupae can wait in cocoons and emerge when vibration signals a host — the “I returned from vacation” surprise. Humidity helps them; very dry interiors slow them.

Health and property risk

Anemia in heavy pet infestations (veterinary emergency), tapeworms (Dipylidium) via swallowed fleas, allergic dermatitis, plague is a wild-rodent flea story in the West more than a house cat-flea story — still do not handle sick wild animals. Murine typhus is a regional public-health topic in some southern cities involving fleas and opossums — follow local health departments.

Proven control sequence

Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.

  1. Treat every pet in the home as a veterinarian directs. On-animal products are the core. All dogs and cats. Timing matters.
  2. Wash bedding and vacuum daily during knockdown. Seams, under furniture, the car if the pet rides. Empty vacuum outside.
  3. Premise IGR if labeled and needed. Breaks the egg/larva pipeline. Adult fogs alone fail.
  4. Yard only if wildlife or outdoor pets require it. Labeled products, not a random agricultural dump. Opossums under a deck are a wildlife-exclusion job too.

Tools for a flea rebound

Treat the pet as a veterinarian directs. Comb, heat-wash bedding, vacuum. A fogger without the animal program fails.

The pet is usually the reservoir. Comb, wash bedding on heat, and vacuum. A house spray without the animal program is how fleas bounce back in a week.

Prevention that actually sticks

  • Year-round preventives in much of the South; seasonal in the North as a vet advises.
  • Do not let stray animals nap on the sofa as a hobby.

When to hire a licensed professional

Heavy infestations, rental turnovers, and homes with infants where product choice needs care. Vets first for the animals.

Legal and safety notes. Pet pesticides have species and weight limits — cats die from some dog products. That is a label and veterinary fact. EPA premise labels: no outdoor products indoors.

United States and Tier 1 notes

Year-round in the Gulf and California irrigated suburbs. Winter pause outdoors in the Upper Midwest does not pause a heated carpet. Australia and the UK have the same cat flea biology with different product names.

Common questions

We have no pets. Can we have fleas?

Yes — previous occupant’s pets, wildlife under a porch, or a visiting animal. Still clean the carpet pipeline.
