How to get rid of American dog ticks

American dog ticks are the ornate, larger ticks people pull off dogs after a hike in much of the eastern US. They transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever in some regions and can cause tick paralysis rarely. They are not the primary Lyme vector (that is Ixodes). Identification changes what you worry about. Control is still checks, repellents, veterinarian preventives for pets, and not a match to burn them off.
How to identify American dog tick
- Mottled white or gray scutum on adults; larger than blacklegged adults when unfed.
- Shorter mouthparts than Ixodes.
- Questing on grass along trails and field edges.
Signs of an infestation
- Ticks on dogs after fields.
- Attached ticks on people, often larger and noticed sooner than nymphal Ixodes.
Biology and why they show up
They use rodents and other mammals as hosts at different stages. Dogs are common adult hosts. They prefer slightly drier grassy habitat than deep Ixodes woods in some landscapes — still overlap.
