How to get rid of Lone star ticks

Lone star ticks are aggressive. Females have a single white spot on the scutum. They have been associated with ehrlichiosis, Heartland and Bourbon viruses in some areas, and alpha-gal syndrome (red-meat allergy) after bites — a medical diagnosis, not a pesticide claim. They are expanding in range. CDC still emphasizes avoidance and checks. If you develop delayed allergic reactions to meat after a tick bite history, that is an allergist, not a lawn service.
How to identify Lone star tick
- Female with a single white spot; males with scattered spots; long mouthparts.
- Nymphs and adults both readily bite people.
- Often in woods, fields, and even lawns in the South.

- Multiple ticks crawling on clothing quickly after entering habitat.
- Painful bites, attached ticks.
Biology and why they show up
Three-host tick. White-tailed deer are important. Range is expanding with climate and hosts. They quest more aggressively than some Ixodes in heat.

Bacterial and viral pathogens, alpha-gal syndrome, heavy nuisance biting. Lyme is still primarily Ixodes — but overlapping range means you can meet both.

Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Treat them as an aggressive biter. Permethrin-treated clothing as labeled, repellents, prompt checks — more urgently than a casual walk in some southern woods.
- Landscaping and pets. Same edge management. Veterinarian preventives because pets bring them onto porches.
- Medical follow-up for unusual symptoms. Fever, or new meat allergy symptoms, belong in a clinic with your tick history.
