How to get rid of Chiggers

Trombiculidae larvae

Also called: red bugs, harvest mites

Chiggers are mite larvae that attach to skin, typically at sock lines and waistbands, and cause intense, delayed itching. They do not burrow in like folklore says; they feed at a stylostome. They are not ticks and not a house infestation. Prevention is clothing, DEET or other EPA-registered repellents as labeled, and showering after being in tall grass. Treating a living room for chiggers after a hike is wasted chemistry. Scrub with soap after exposure; do not pour undiluted solvents on skin.

How to identify Chigger

  • You rarely see the larva; you see welts at constrictions of clothing.
  • Itching delayed hours after being in grass or brush.

Signs of an infestation

  • Clusters of welts at boot tops and belts after outdoor work.

Biology and why they show up

Only larvae are parasitic on vertebrates. Adults are in soil. Warm, humid grass. Not an indoor breeding pest.

Health and property risk

Itching, secondary infection from scratching. In some world regions other trombiculids transmit scrub typhus — not the typical US story. Still, do not ignore fever after travel.

Proven control sequence

Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.

  1. Prevent in habitat. Repellents, long pants, shower after, wash clothes.
  2. Soothe bites without folklore acid. Clinician or pharmacist for severe reactions. Do not apply pesticides to skin that are not labeled as repellents/treatments.
  3. Do not treat the house. They did not colonize your sofa from one hike.

Tools for chigger country

Repellent, socks, and a shower after tall grass. Yard sprays are a labeled extra, not a hike plan.

EPA-registered insect repellent

EPA-registered insect repellent

DEET or picaridin on skin as the label allows, plus a shower and a full-body check. A yard spray is not a hike protocol. Tweezers still belong in the kit.

Prevention that actually sticks

  • Stay out of tall wet grass when you can, or dress for it.

When to hire a licensed professional

Only for allergic complications — medical. Landscaping tall grass at play edges helps.

Legal and safety notes. Repellent labels, especially on children.

United States and Tier 1 notes

Southeast and Midwest summers. Less a high-desert tick substitute. UK harvest mites are related folklore.

Common questions

Do they live under the skin?

They do not tunnel like scabies mites. They feed at the surface. Showering after exposure still helps.
