How small a hole can a mouse fit through?
A House mouse can use a gap about ¼ inch (6 mm). The pencil test is the field rule. If a pencil slides under the door, a mouse can too. Steel wool and copper mesh beat foam. Then set a dozen snap traps along the wall, not two in the middle of the room.
Deer mice are a health fork
If you are in rural outbuildings and the mouse is bicolored with a white belly, read the Deer mouse page and CDC hantavirus notes before you sweep a nest. House mice in a city kitchen are a different risk conversation, still not a reason to dry-sweep droppings.
