How long can rats live without food?
A commensal rat will not sit in a sealed empty box for weeks. They need water more urgently than dry food. In a real house there is always a leak, a pet bowl, or grease. “Starve them out” without exclusion is how they move to the neighbor and come back.
Sanitation still matters
Pick up pet food at night, close dumpsters, and fix drips because that drops the carrying capacity. It does not replace a door sweep. CDC rodent control is sanitation plus exclusion plus targeted trapping, not a hunger strike.
