Rodents
Does peppermint oil repel rats?
Not as a control program. Essential-oil cotton balls are a scent, not a door sweep. Rats and mice may avoid a new smell for a night and then walk past it to the pet food. Use traps on the runway and metal on the gap. EPA’s safe pest control page is sanitation and exclusion, not aromatherapy.
Why the videos persist
A rat that left because you cleaned the kitchen gets credited to the oil. When it returns, people buy more oil. That is a subscription, not IPM. If a product is sold as a rodent pesticide, it needs an EPA registration for that use. A grocery mint bottle is not that.
