How to get rid of Dampwood termites
Zootermopsis and related genera
Need a look-alike split? Use Drywood vs subterranean vs dampwood termites, then follow the control sequence on this page.
Dampwood termites need wet wood. They are often a moisture diagnosis wearing insect wings. Fix the leak, the grade, and the crawlspace ventilation, and you remove the cafeteria. Treating dry, sound lumber for dampwood termites is usually the wrong spend. They can still damage wet structural members in the Pacific Northwest. They are not Formosans. If the wood is sound and dry, look again — you may have subterranean tubes or carpenter ants.
How to identify Dampwood termite
- Large termites in very wet wood, logs, and leaky sills.
- No extensive soil-tube network like Reticulitermes (biology differs).
- Frass may be in galleries of wet wood rather than dry pellets of drywood species.
Signs of an infestation
- Soft, wet, failing wood with termites inside.
- Chronic plumbing or roof leaks.
Biology and why they show up
Colonies in damp timber. Moisture is the limiting factor. Pacific species are well known to extension services in OR, WA, and northern CA.
Health and property risk
Localized structural loss where wood stays wet. The leak may be the expensive part (rot, mold).
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Stop the water. Roof, bath, grade, irrigation. Replace rotten members. This is the treatment.
- Improve crawlspace moisture. Vapor barriers and drainage as designed — not random vent closing.
- Do not tent a house as the first idea. Wrong termite group for classic drywood fumigation logic. Diagnose first.

Tools that support a dampwood-termite site
Wet wood is the habitat. Dry the member. A meter tells you if the fix actually dried.

Hardware
Pin-type wood moisture meter
Damp wood is carpenter-ant and termite language. A meter tells you if the sill, shower wall, or fascia is actually wet before you buy a spray. Wet still needs a building fix.
Hardware
Headlamp or flashlight for inspections
German cockroaches, rodent runways, and bed-bug harborages are night-shift jobs. A light you can point into a hinge beats another can of spray.
Prevention that actually sticks
- Keep wood dry. It sounds simple because it is the whole game.
When to hire a licensed professional
A pest operator plus a moisture/roof contractor. Either alone misses half.
United States and Tier 1 notes
Pacific Northwest primarily in the US. Other dampwood groups exist globally in wet forests. Florida’s termite story is usually subterranean/drywood/Formosan, not this page.
Common questions
Can they attack dry furniture?
Not as a lifestyle. If furniture is infested, it was wet or you have a different beetle or drywood species.
How much does termite treatment cost in the United States?
Licensed termite work is a construction-adjacent service, not a retail spray. Liquid barriers, baiting systems, and drywood treatments vary widely by region, foundation type, and whether a repair is included — often from the high hundreds into several thousand dollars. Get a licensed inspection. A hardware-aisle can does not treat a colony.
