How to get rid of Formosan subterranean termites
Coptotermes formosanus
Formosan termites are an invasive subterranean species that can form enormous colonies, carton nests in walls and trees, and damage that outruns a casual Reticulitermes job. Hawaii and New Orleans did not invent anxiety around them without cause. Treatment is still licensed IPM — baits and liquids — plus tree and structure inspection. A homeowner with a swarm of pale termites with hairy wings in a Gulf city should not assume “regular subterranean.” Get a species-aware inspector.
How to identify Formosan subterranean termite
- Soldiers with oval heads and inside-curving mandibles (professionals confirm).
- Carton (chewed wood and saliva) nests in walls, attics, and trees.
- Large swarms, often in the evening, around lights in season.
- More aggressive foraging than typical Reticulitermes in infested cities.
Signs of an infestation
- Rapid wood failure, carton in voids, heavy swarming, infested living trees near the house.
Biology and why they show up
Colonies can be huge. They need moisture but can use carton to store it. They infest boats, high-rises, and urban trees. Invasive origin: East Asia; established in the US South and Hawaii.
Health and property risk
Faster structural loss, expensive tree and building repairs, neighborhood-scale pressure in infested cities.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Inspect trees and planters, not only sills. Formosans use landscape as well as lumber.
- Licensed colony treatment. Baits and/or liquids designed for Coptotermes pressure. This is not a weekend trench with leftover yard product.
- Moisture and wood hygiene. Same as other subterranean termites, done more strictly.
- Neighborhood realism. A treated house next to an infested oak is still in a Formosan city. Maintenance inspections continue.

Hardware
Pin-type wood moisture meter
Damp wood is carpenter-ant and termite language. A meter tells you if the sill, shower wall, or fascia is actually wet before you buy a spray. Wet still needs a building fix.
Hardware
Headlamp or flashlight for inspections
German cockroaches, rodent runways, and bed-bug harborages are night-shift jobs. A light you can point into a hinge beats another can of spray.
Prevention that actually sticks
- Do not move infested railroad ties and soil casually (historical spread pathway).
- Keep irrigation off the slab edge.
When to hire a licensed professional
Always. Cities with Formosan history have operators who know the difference. Ask.
United States and Tier 1 notes
Louisiana is the US textbook. Hawaii likewise. Gulf ports. Not a Maine cabin default. East Asia is the native range.
Common questions
Are they immune to treatment?
No. They require thorough, professional, often larger-scale programs than a small Reticulitermes colony.
How much does termite treatment cost in the United States?
Licensed termite work is a construction-adjacent service, not a retail spray. Liquid barriers, baiting systems, and drywood treatments vary widely by region, foundation type, and whether a repair is included — often from the high hundreds into several thousand dollars. Get a licensed inspection. A hardware-aisle can does not treat a colony.
