Pest control in California

California is large enough to be several pest countries: drywood termites and Argentine ants in the south and coast, Norway rats in ports, roof rats in suburbs, mosquitoes in irrigated valleys, and mountain wildlife at the edges of towns. DPR regulation means the product on a national blog may not be the product on a California shelf.

Climate and housing that drive pests

Mediterranean coast, Central Valley agriculture, desert southeast, and alpine east. Each has a different termite and ant complex. Wildfire years displace rodents and increase indoor wildlife calls.

Pests that dominate this region

Seasonal calendar

SeasonWhat to watch
WinterRains push ants and rodents. Check crawlspace moisture.
SpringTermite alates. Wildlife exclusion windows.
SummerDrought foraging. Yellowjackets.
FallFirst storms. Rodent-proof before wet weather.

Rules, labels, and who can treat

California Department of Pesticide Regulation and county agricultural commissioners. Structural pest control has its own licensing board culture. Prop 65 notices on products are not IPM instructions — still read the EPA/DPR label.

Practical notes for this region

Fumigation for drywood termites is a neighbor-notice, pet, plant, and food-removal operation. Hire the licensee; do not improvise.
