How to get rid of Carpenter bees
Xylocopa spp.
Carpenter bees drill neat half-inch round galleries in wood. Males hover and cannot sting; females rarely sting unless handled. They nest in wood, they do not eat it like termites. Paint or stain, treat galleries, plug, and watch for woodpeckers hunting larvae — the bird often does more damage than the bee. They are pollinators. Fogging a yard is the wrong biology.
How to identify Carpenter bee
- Bumble-bee shape with a shiny abdomen.
- Round 1/2-inch holes in eaves and deck rails.
- Hovering males at the hole.
Signs of an infestation
- Sawdust under a hole.
- Bee traffic in fascia.
- Woodpecker follow-up damage.
Biology and why they show up
Solitary nesters in galleries that turn with the grain. Prefer bare weathered wood.
Health and property risk
Wood damage over years. Low sting risk. Not a picnic wasp.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Paint, stain, or cap the wood. The prevention that actually works.
- Treat then plug galleries. Labeled dust or foam, then dowels and paint. Do not blindly plug a gallery that opens into a room without treatment.

Tools for carpenter bees in fascia
Trap some adults, then fill galleries and paint. The hole is an invitation if you leave it open.

Hardware
Carpenter bee trap
Traps catch some adults. Fill old holes with wood-compatible filler after activity drops or they reuse the gallery. Paint and seal the fascia so the next generation does not get a free hotel.
Hardware
Exterior sealant for gaps and joints
Seal utility penetrations, trim joints, and hairline gaps after you know nothing is trapped inside. Sealant without mesh is not a rat patch. Keep it off weep holes that a wall needs to drain.
Prevention that actually sticks
- Composites or hardwoods on historically hit fascia.
- Finish exposed end grain.
When to hire a licensed professional
High fascia and historic millwork.
United States and Tier 1 notes
Eastern Xylocopa virginica is classic. Western species similar.
Common questions
Will a fake owl work?
No. Finish the wood.
