How to get rid of Fruit flies
Drosophila spp.
Need a look-alike split? Use Fruit fly vs fungus gnat vs drain fly, then follow the control sequence on this page.
Fruit flies (vinegar flies) breed in a fermenting film: a potato in a crisper, a recycling bin, a bar drain, a dirty mop. Throw out the source, rinse bottles, and use a vinegar cup only to mop up leftover adults. Vinegar does not kill eggs in a hidden onion. They are not fungus gnats and not drain flies.
Fruit flies are tiny tan flies with red eyes (often) that breed in fermenting film: a potato in a crisper, a recycling bin, a bar drain, a dirty mop. They are not drain flies (moth-like, darker, drain film of a different sort) and not fungus gnats (soil). The control is throw out the source, rinse recyclables, and use a simple cup trap to judge leftover adults. Fogging a kitchen for Drosophila is how you contaminate food without touching the banana.
How to identify Fruit fly
- Tiny, tan, often red eyes, hover around fruit and beer.
- Larvae in fermenting pulp, not in dry flour (usually).
Signs of an infestation
- Clouds around a compost crock or empty wine bottle.
- Adults at a fruit bowl.
Biology and why they show up
Extremely fast generations in warm kitchens. They track ethanol and vinegar odors.
Health and property risk
Nuisance and minor food contamination. Not a biting disease vector.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Hunt the film. Crisper drawers, under the fridge, recycling, mops, bar guns. Discard or wash.
- Trap remaining adults. A jar with cider vinegar and a drop of soap. This is monitoring plus mop-up, not the whole program if a rotten onion remains.
- Do not spray produce. Wash, discard, and clean. Insecticide on food is a label and health fail.

Tools for fruit flies
Empty the breeding site first. A trap without sanitation is a conversation piece.

Source-finding checklist
- Crisper drawers, a single rotten potato or onion, and fruit bowls in August.
- Recycling: beer bottles, wine, kombucha, juice — rinse them.
- Under the fridge, stove kickplate, and a spill in a toaster tray.
- Mops, sponges, and bar guns with a sugar film.
- Houseplant saucers (more often Fungus gnat) and bathroom film (more often Drain fly).
- A neighbor’s shared dumpster in apartments — still hunt your unit first.
Location split: Fruit fly vs fungus gnat vs drain fly. Sanitation method: Sanitation and harborage reduction.
Lifecycle and eggs
Drosophila generations are extremely fast in a warm kitchen. Females lay on fermenting pulp. A vinegar trap catches some adults; it does not reach eggs and larvae in a film you have not washed. “Does vinegar kill fruit fly eggs?” — not in the potato you left in the crisper. Remove the breeding site or you refill the trap forever.
7-day elimination plan
- Day 1 — hunt and discard. Empty the crisper. Rinse recycling. Wash the mop. Check under appliances. No pesticide on food.
- Days 1–7 — trap leftover adults. A jar of cider vinegar with a drop of soap, or a funnel trap. This is mop-up and a monitor, not the whole program.
- Days 2–4 — reclean if they rebound. You missed a source. Look again: a houseplant saucer, a compost crock, a drain film you mistook for fruit flies.
- Day 7 — decide. If clouds remain with a clean kitchen, you may have drain flies or gnats, or a hidden spill. Compare before you fog a kitchen and contaminate food.
Prevention that actually sticks
- Rinse bottles. Take out compost daily in summer.
- Do not store overripe fruit on the counter in August.
When to hire a licensed professional
Bars and grocery produce rooms. Homeowners can usually finish this in two days of hunting.
United States and Tier 1 notes
Global indoor pest of fermented sugar.
Common questions
I cleaned and they remain.
You missed a source: a spill under a stove, a houseplant saucer, or a neighbor’s shared dumpster in apartments. Keep hunting.
Does vinegar kill fruit fly eggs?
A vinegar trap catches adults. Eggs sit in fermenting pulp you have to discard or wash. Vinegar is not a pesticide for the crisper.
How long does it take to get rid of fruit flies?
If you remove the source, leftover adults often drop within a few days. If they do not, you missed a film.
Are they drain flies?
Fruit flies hover on produce and beer. Drain flies are fuzzy and rest on bathroom walls. Wrong source if you mix them.
