House mice
Best mouse traps
The best mouse trap is the one you will set in quantity, on the edge the mouse already uses. A single trap in the middle of the kitchen loses to a house mouse that only travels the baseboard. Identify House mouse versus Deer mouse in the How to get rid of mice guide before you buy bait, then come back here for the hardware.

Best overall: Victor M150 metal-pedal mouse snap traps (12-pack). A metal pedal holds peanut butter, and a 12-pack is the right unit. Set them perpendicular to the wall, trigger toward the baseboard, and check daily.

Which one to buy
Hardware
Victor M150 metal-pedal mouse snap traps (12-pack)
Best overall — A metal pedal holds peanut butter, and a 12-pack is the right unit. Set them perpendicular to the wall, trigger toward the baseboard, and check daily.
Hardware
Victor Easy Set mouse traps (12-pack)
Best if you hate setting traps — The plastic Easy Set is slower to bait well than a metal pedal, but you will actually arm a dozen of them. Placement still beats the mechanism.
Hardware
Tomcat Press 'N Set mouse traps
Best press-and-set — A foot press is useful when you are covering a garage and a pantry the same evening. Keep the trap tight to the wall or mice run past the pedal.
Hardware
Catchmaster mouse and insect glue traps
Best monitor, weak control — Glue shows traffic. It is a poor primary control for an established house mouse, and it is a pet and child hazard. Prefer snap traps where anything else uses the floor.
Hardware
Small live-catch mouse trap
Best live-catch — Only if you will check it twice a day. A forgotten live trap is a welfare failure. Releasing a house mouse next door is not control. See the live-trap guide before you buy only this.
How many traps to buy
House mice are less trap-shy than Norway rats, and they still beat two traps. For one kitchen, start with a 12-pack and put most of them along the walls behind the stove, the refrigerator, and the pantry toe-kick. A garage or a stacked apartment needs a second pack. Pull traps after a week of empty catches only if you have also sealed the gaps.
Peanut butter on a metal pedal outlasts cheese. If the mouse is licking the bait and not tripping the trap, use less bait so the animal has to work the pedal. Pre-baiting is more important for rats than for house mice.
What not to buy first
- A two-pack “just in case.” You will under-trap and decide traps do not work.
- Indoor loose rodenticide. Carcasses end up in appliances, and children and pets reach bait. Rodent baiting (rodenticides) is an outdoor-station conversation.
- A plug-in ultrasonic as the only tool. It does not close a quarter-inch gap. The repellent guide explains the limit.
- Rat traps for a confirmed mouse. They work, but you will set fewer of them and miss the runway.
Common questions
What is the best bait for a mouse trap?
A pea of peanut butter on the pedal. It sticks. Cheese dries and gets stolen. If the mouse is shy, set the trap unset with bait for one night, then arm it.
Snap trap or glue trap for mice?
Snap traps are the control tool. Glue boards are a monitor and a pet hazard. Use glue only where you can check it daily and nothing else can reach it.
Will one mouse trap solve an infestation?
No. Mice use several runways, and a missed quarter-inch hole replaces the one you caught. Buy a dozen, trap the edges, and seal with copper mesh and a door sweep.
