How to get rid of pigeons

Columba livia

Also called: city pigeon, rock dove

Pigeons are feral Columba that paint ledges with droppings. Histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis are the rare-but-real reasons not to dry-sweep decades of guano without protection. Control is exclusion (netting, spikes used correctly, slope ledges), not poison corn that kills hawks. Migratory Bird Treaty Act does not protect feral pigeons the way it protects native migratory birds — still, methods must be legal and not cruel. Do not use glue on ledges. Remove nests from equipment after you have a plan to block re-entry.

How to identify Rock pigeon

  • Variable iridescent city birds, cooing, droppings on ledges, nests of sticks on signs and HVAC.
  • Not native mourning doves (protected). ID before you act.

Signs of an infestation

  • Whitewash on a loading dock.
  • Nests in a warehouse truss. Parasites (ticks, mites) around heavy roosts.

Biology and why they show up

Year-round breeding in cities. Flock to spilled grain. They return to the same ledge.

Health and property risk

Slippery droppings, respiratory risk from large dry guano disturbance, mites. Secondary poisoning if you use illegal baits.

Proven control sequence

Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.

  1. Exclude the ledge. Netting, properly installed spikes, slope modifications. DIY spikes installed wrong injure birds and fail.
  2. Sanitation of guano with PPE. Do not dry-sweep. Wet, bag, respiratory protection on large jobs — restoration firms exist.
  3. No poison corn. Raptors and pets. Illegal or reckless depending on product and place.

Tools for pigeons on ledges

Exclude roosts with hardware and netting done to code. Poison is not a rooftop plan.

Cut patches for vents, soffits, and the gaps foam cannot hold. Quarter-inch mesh stops mice; rats need a heavier gauge and no loose edges. Fasten to wood or masonry, then seal the rim.

Prevention that actually sticks

  • Design ledges that do not hold nests. Keep grain spills cleaned at elevators.

When to hire a licensed professional

High-rises, food plants, historic buildings. Guano abatement.

Legal and safety notes. Feral pigeons vs protected doves and raptors. No glue traps for birds. Local ordinances. MBTA still protects many other birds on the same building — ID nests.

United States and Tier 1 notes

Global feral pigeon. Same IPM in NYC, London, and Singapore with local wildlife law overlays.

Common questions

Will a fake owl work?

Pigeons habituate. Physical exclusion lasts.
