How to get rid of House sparrows
Passer domesticus
House sparrows are invasive cavity-nesters that kill native bluebirds competing for boxes and nest in signs and gas-station eaves. Like starlings, they are generally not MBTA-protected. Control is exclusion and managing nest boxes (monitoring, sparrow-resistant designs) — not poisoning a shopping center. They are not native song sparrows. ID before you remove a nest. Glue and torture devices are unacceptable.
How to identify House sparrow
- Males with black bibs, urban cheep, bulky nests in signs and boxes.
- Not a native sparrow of fields — different genus and legal status.
Signs of an infestation
- Nests in a storefront letter. Dead native nestlings in a bluebird box (sad and diagnostic of competition).
- Droppings on a loading dock.
Biology and why they show up
Invasive, associated with humans, multiple broods. Aggressive at cavities.
Health and property risk
Native cavity-nester suppression, mess, minor health from droppings. Not a raptor-poison story unless you do something stupid with bait.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Exclude cavities and signs. Net or block letters. Vent screens.
- Bluebird boxes: monitor. Follow conservation-org guidance on legal nest management. Do not guess.
- No glue, no poison at a cafe. Exclusion and sanitation of crumbs.

Tools for house sparrows in vents
Screen the vent before the nest is active. Migratory birds have different rules — house sparrows are a commensal exception in the US, but check the hole first.

Hardware
1/4-inch galvanized hardware cloth
Cut patches for vents, soffits, and the gaps foam cannot hold. Quarter-inch mesh stops mice; rats need a heavier gauge and no loose edges. Fasten to wood or masonry, then seal the rim.
Hardware
Window screen repair kit
A torn screen is a mosquito and fly door. Patch or respline. Attic vents still need hardware cloth, not fiberglass, if rodents are the pressure.
Prevention that actually sticks
- Sparrow-resistant box designs where you want bluebirds.
- Do not leave open signs as apartments.
When to hire a licensed professional
Commercial storefronts, conservation box trails.
United States and Tier 1 notes
US-wide invasive. In the UK, house sparrows have declined and are a conservation species — do not apply US “invasive pest” lethal culture there.
Common questions
Can I take the nest out of a Walmart letter?
If it is a house sparrow and local law allows, still check for eggs/young and do not create a cruelty issue. Then block the letter so it does not return. When unsure, a wildlife operator.
