How to get rid of American beavers
Castor canadensis
Beavers are keystone wetland engineers. They are a “pest” only when a dam floods a road, septic, or timber lot. The adult solutions are pond levelers (flexible-pipe devices), culvert protection, tree wrapping, and, where legal, trapping by professionals. Dynamite, illegal killing, and “just drain the wetland” create downstream floods and legal trouble. This directory lists beavers because property managers search for them — the ethical and legal path is coexistence devices first. They have paddle tails. If the tail is round, you may have nutria.
How to identify American beaver
- Paddle tail, huge orange incisors, lodge or bank den, dams of sticks and mud.
- Fresh-cut aspen and willow with distinctive chip piles.
Signs of an infestation
- Rising water behind a new dam.
- Girdled trees near a creek.
- Culvert plugged with sticks.
Biology and why they show up
Family groups. Night work. They maintain dams obsessively — that is why levelers work (they cannot hear/feel the leak the same way). They eat cambium, not fish.
Health and property risk
Flooding infrastructure, tree loss, rare giardia conversations in water (do not drink untreated surface water anyway). Bites if someone tries to grab a beaver — medical care.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Install a pond leveler or culvert guard. This is the proven non-lethal method used by wildlife agencies. Hire someone who has done it.
- Wrap high-value trees. Heavy wire cylinders, not landscape fabric.
- Lethal control last and legal. Permits often required. Removing one beaver without fixing the site just invites the next pair.
Prevention that actually sticks
- Do not plant favorite aspen at the edge of a known beaver creek without wraps.
- Keep septic and crawlspaces above plausible flood elevation.
When to hire a licensed professional
Always for dams on public water or roads. Landowners still usually need permits.
United States and Tier 1 notes
Nationwide recovery. Urban beavers now show up in metro creeks (Seattle, Chicago, DC). Europe’s Eurasian beaver is a different species with even stronger protections in many countries.
Common questions
Can I just tear the dam out every morning?
They rebuild at night. You will lose. Use a leveler.
