How to get rid of slugs and snails
Gastropoda (Deroceras, Cornu, and others)
Slugs and snails rasp holes in hostas, lettuce, and seedlings and leave slime trails. They are mollusks, not insects — so many insecticides do nothing useful. Control is dry the garden edge, boards-as-traps, copper barriers, iron-phosphate baits that are more pet-sensible than old metaldehyde (still read the label — dogs can still get into baits), and night hand-picking. Beer traps work as drowning stations and also as a science fair. Do not salt a garden as a program; you will wreck soil and still miss the population in the ivy.
How to identify Slug and snail (garden)
- Slime trails, irregular holes in succulent leaves, night activity.
- Snails with shells, slugs without. Hide under pots by day.
Signs of an infestation
- Silver trails on a patio.
- Ragged hostas. Seedlings gone by morning.
Biology and why they show up
Moisture-dependent. Lay eggs in damp soil. Pacific Northwest is slug country. They are not millipedes (legs).
Health and property risk
Garden loss. Some species are intermediate hosts of parasites in other countries — wash produce. Metaldehyde bait is a known dog-poisoning problem; choose products and placements carefully.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Sanitation of hiding spots. Lift boards, reduce ivy against beds, water in the morning so surfaces dry at night.
- Barriers and traps. Copper tape on pots, boards you flip in the morning, hand-pick at night with a headlamp.
- Baits: iron phosphate preferred for many yards. Still keep pets off. Metaldehyde: extra caution, some jurisdictions restrict it. Follow the label. No salt war on soil.

Tools for slugs in beds
Iron phosphate bait as labeled, plus drier habitat. Beer cups are optional theater.

Prevention that actually sticks
- Morning irrigation. Less groundcover against seedling beds.
- Seedling collars.
When to hire a licensed professional
Production nurseries. Homes: night picking plus bait if needed.
United States and Tier 1 notes
Pacific Coast slug capital. Humid East. Drier Southwest still has them in irrigated beds. UK gardens are a cultural slug epic — same IPM, local products (metaldehyde banned in GB).
Common questions
Will crushed eggshells work?
Weak, short-lived, and slugs often cross them. Night picking plus habitat beats folklore grit.
