How to get rid of Yellow sac spiders
Cheiracanthium spp.
Yellow sac spiders are pale, long-legged nocturnal hunters that hide in silken sacs in corners of rooms and in foliage. They get blamed for recluse bites in parts of the country outside recluse range. Bites can be painful and red; they are not typically the necrotic legend of Loxosceles. Control is vacuuming sacs, shaking bedding, and reducing clutter. They wander more than cobweb sitters.
How to identify Yellow sac spider
- Pale yellow to greenish, dark foot tips often, no violin, eight eyes, silk sac in a corner by day.
- Hunts at night on walls.
Signs of an infestation
- White silk retreats in ceiling corners.
- A pale spider on a wall at night.
Biology and why they show up
Nocturnal hunters. Indoor and garden. People meet them in sheets sometimes.
Health and property risk
Painful bite possible; medical care if severe. Misattributed “recluse” bites on the coasts often belong to other spiders or bacteria.
Proven control sequence
Work in this order. Skipping inspection or exclusion is why most “treatments” bounce back in a week.
- Vacuum corner sacs. Regularly if they bother you.
- Shake out linens. Especially in cluttered rooms.
Prevention that actually sticks
- Less wall clutter. Screens.
When to hire a licensed professional
ID when someone insists they have recluses outside the range.
United States and Tier 1 notes
US-wide indoor wanderer. Similar Cheiracanthium globally.
Common questions
Did this cause my necrotic sore?
Only a clinician can evaluate a wound. Sac spiders are often blamed. Do not self-diagnose necrosis.
